Relationship
Much of human life is wasted as in Zen it is says, We eat, excrete, sleep, and get up ; that is our World. All we have to thereafter is die. We question of our rights than about our duties. We want to know about others more than what desire to know ourselves. The question more about what one knows and seldom inquires of Wisdom one shoud have.
There is much difference between questioning and inquiry. Questioning is all about the external world, while Wisdom is all about internal World. Therefore we know of relationship in family, in community, in society, in comity of nations but rarely one has inquired about relationship transcending family, community, society, the comity of nations. Rarely have one realizes that true relationship is emotional, which one experiences when one inquires and transcends the physical relationship.
Therefore one should inquire the true nature of the physical relationship to reach out to the true emotional relationship. Inquiry will reveal that physical relation begins with birth in a physical body and ends with decay, destruction and death of the body. With birth in a physical form one and the others acquire physical relationship between one another as father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncles and aunts, friends and foes. With decay, destruction and death of the body physical relationship between one another as father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncles and aunts, friends and foes ceases. With decay, destruction and death of the body the ‘Person’ ceases thereafter to recognize his earlier physical relationships with others between one another as father, mother,  son, daughter, brother, sister, uncles and aunts, friends and foes.
If   one cultivate emotional relationship with the essence that exists within the forms of one and another, then With decay, destruction and death of the physical body relationship with the essence will not cease since the essence within form is eternal unlike the form which is momentary, transient and impermanent. Then even if the forms change the essence within will experience it existence but also emotional relationship within essences in other forms. That is what Krishna when he said to Arjuna that he knows all the forms in which he is the essence has inhabited while Arjuna does not know.
Briahd Aranyaka Upanishad attributes the creation of the physical form to the creatures whereas the essence posited within those forms to the Supreme Being.  Isha Upanishad says that the one who being consciously aware sees that the essence within his form is same as the essence in others, and that all beings on that account have become with  the essence within his form them he neither feels revulsion nor has he any delusion or sorrow.  Then as Krishna pointed out since neither the essence in others was ever not nor would ever cease to be, the one would cease to be attached to physical relationship with forms as father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncles and aunts, friends and foes, concentrating on the emotional relationship of the essence within all the other forms.
Then the question about what one knows would not arise the Wisdom of one should attain having been experienced. The question about one’s roght would not arise being sympathetic to the duties which one owes to the others. Human life would not be wasted in eating, excreting, sleeping and getting, experiencing every moment in life as the essence abides in the forms or the essences ceases to find the form decaying, deteriorated or destroyed. This much is enough. let us leave for tose who inquire to reflect and ruminate on what has been spoken.

This is my Preface to my new book - Sri Madhvaxhary's Commenraey on Chhandogy Upanishad.

Preface

In my study of various scriptures,  I have experienced the vast sweep of intellectual ideas expressed with clarity of vision and purity of heart, in highly arresting poetic signs and symbols as well as down to earth , rational,  reasonable, and well argued,  well debated logical conclusions.  Every  seer and saint is said to have experienced the Truth, Satya. The Prime existence in its true and pure form in every thing that is manifest creation and every manifest thing in the supreme Self, but when he expresses it and communicates it is as per his attributes and inclinations which has shaped his thoughts speech and actions using the signs, symbols, legends I the language which he knows and which the people, the place and the period know where and when he communicates.

Therefore though there exists unity is their experiences their expressions may be diversely communicated. One finds expressions of some such as would sweep one from the depths of traditional beliefs, faiths dogmas with their intellectual grandeur, or would be such as would touch the core of the heart, or would enlighten with their intellectual brilliance or worth their rational, reasoned down to the earth examples and statements. Some are  outwardly intellectual, philosophical and some are outwardly emotional and devotional leaving to the seeker not accept the one and reject the other but accept both and seek the emotional, the devotional in their intellectual, philosophical expressions and the intellectual and philosophical truths in their emotional, devotional expressions.

This is what I have attempted when dealing with the teachings of Sri Madhvacharya. While to mind Sri Shankar appeared as highly intellectual and philosophical leaning towards the emotional and devotional Sri Madhva appears outwardly leaning to the emotional and devotional though intellectually and philosophical rational, reasonable and logical in hisinterpetation and presentation. The language used in scriptures as well as the one used by the Acharyas is Sanskrit which is one of the most cryptic in style and mystical in expression. It is the language which has the power to become mystical concealing the pure and the holy from the irreligious inquisitor.  It has the power of the Spirit and attuned to reveal the matrix of Satya, the Prime Existence, in both the unmanifest and manifest forms, incorporating both the he sense and of the voice, fashioning ideas as instrument of power, giving meaning to the Divine presence,  incorporating the unseen divine  harmonies to the empirical language.

I fully subscribe to Albert Einstein's views when he said that "Reigious feelings take the form of raptuous amazement at the harmoney of natural Law, which reveals an intellegence of such superiority that compared to it all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection." Sri Aurobindo wrote that seers clothed their language and words and images which had equally a spiritual sense for the elect and a concrete sense for the ordinary worshippers, but they were obliged to keep concealed their experiences behind an elaborate symbols, suggestions, myths and legends of their era, lest the powers which the hymns possessed may be misused by the evil people.

Therefore, without being disrespectable, it must be accepted as reasonable  assumption that it was difficult for the Acharyas and Darshankaras to access the intent of the intellectual of upanishads as it was difficult for the upanishadic intellectuals  to understand the intent of the seers. It is only the elect that can  know  the intent of the Vedic truth. Rarely does one like Yajnyavalkya,  Shankara,  Madhva or even Sureshvara or Jayatirtha or Raghvendra who could experience the truths seen and heard by the Vedic seers. All the rest are only  seekers  who can take pride in the Knowledge they have gathered,  but not be bold to teach or preach others of the truth seen by the seers or the saints.

Therefore, my purpose is simple. As seeker try to know, try to understand as much as possible according to ons's attributes and inclination,  try to verbalized what you have known and felt as YOUR experience, as your resonance, as your response for others to know, experience, resonate their response verbalizing  them. This would make their thoughts crystellized as their Karma, to be taken furthering the next life, their present gross body decays, disintegrates becomes destroyed, the various thing that had gathered to make his consciousness reverting to the sources from where they have drawn. My purpose is served, whether it will enlighten or confuse other, I do not know. what I am doing I have to do, I will continue to do as long as Prana the Prime Breath keeps alive. So God, the Almighty bless me and assistme in doing what I do.

Before I say Good Bye and God be With You I want to thank

in doing what I have done in my life.

                                                         000Before taking Leave

Using remainder of soap and the tooth paste.

When we were children we were often told that the cake of the soap or the tube of the toothpaste should not be squeezed till the soap or the paste diapers from sight. This was alright when the child is expected to have more cakes of soap or tubes of toothpaste in his long expected duration of life. This was alright when the youth in zest  and bravado thinks that he can afford to buy new cakes and tubes tooth paste.to replace the old, throwing them with gay abandon. But as age catches up and one has faces the alternatives in life, one comes to reflect and choose, considering it wise to use as much as is available and not waste what is left. This belief catches strength and becomes a conviction when the life is ebbing and deaths death steps are seen fast approaching.

Then the one looks back and observes the steps which are traversed, the lengthening shadows that are cast on the long Path traversed. Then the one recollects and remembers all those missed opportunities and wasted moments and things unintelligibly used used. Then he starts preserving the last piece of cake and of the tube, squeezing whatever is left therein. Too much reading in younger days seem to have given me a vivid imagination and mind full of dreams. Even as I was planning to achieve the things which I had dreamed, I was realizing the simplicity and childlike innocence of the dreams and the futility of youthful arrogance as I grew up. And as came closer in age to the sixty years of my life and my active professional occupation were coming to its logical end, I realized the wisdom of keeping a small cake of soap and used tube of tooth paste on my table to look and reflect on the little things and time left for me do all those things that were still left undone in this life, and yet there was little that is still left in the cake and the tube.

While earlier reading was my passion and writing was my hobby from the age little earlier than when I reached sixty years of my age, I decided transform and from then onward life writing became my passion and reading became a hobby. I reflected on what I had read and decided to put in writing what my reflection responded keeping an eye on my age and the remaining piece of the cake and remaining paste in the tube.

Rigveda, Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita as well Zen, Bible and Koran have been defining guidelines for me in my studies.

These are all the foot-prints of his who is this Self, and by it the Self, one knows all this, just as one finds (the cow) by its foot prints. He who knows this finds prominence and praise.

The self within al beings.

There is no other seer, no other hearer, no other hearer, no other thinker, no other knower than this. By this imperishable is all this space woven like warp and woof.

! Now here in this city of Brahman is an abode, a small flower, within which  there is a space. What is within that space should be sought, for that assuredly is what one should desire to understand.

Therefore,

kuva-nnaovaoh kmaa-iNa ijajaIivaYaot\ SatM samaa: | evaM %vaiya naanyaqaotao|ist na kma- ilaPyato naro ||” - Having performed one’s duties in this manner, one should strive to live for hundred years. If acted in this manner, there would be no other way to act and in that event, the (fruits of) actions would attach to the man.

ya&aqa-a$kma-Naao|nya~ laaokao|yaM kma-banQana: | tsqMa- kma- kaOntoya mau>sa=ga samaacar ||” – For and as sacrifice actions should be performed, since in the world by actions performed otherwise, man is bound by the actions performed.

From sixty to eighty three years of my age, 23 books in English and 13 books in Konkani came to be written with whatever energy I had. All my books are the result of my study of religious scriptures understood and experienced and are not intended to teach others. If the books as they were written have helped me. I they also help others, so much the better. If they do not, I have no problem. That is why I have not ventured the books for sale but have allowed them to be downloaded freely from my website : http//www.nageshsonde.com.

I received this e mail. Read carefully. I liked it and perhaps you may too.

A Father's letter to his son - applies to daughters too!!s email

Following is a letter to his son from a renowned Hong Kong TV broadcaster/Child Psychologist.
The words are actually applicable to all of us, young or old, children or parents !
This applies to daughters too. All parents can use this in their teachings to their children.

Dear son,

I am writing this to you because of 3 reasons.

1. Life, fortune and mishaps are unpredictable; nobody knows how long he lives. Some words are better said early.

2. I am your father, and if I don't tell you these, no one else will.

3. What is written is my own personal bitter experiences that perhaps could save you a lot of unnecessary heartaches.

Remember the following as you go through life

1. Do not bear grudge towards those who are not good to you. No one has the responsibility of treating you well, except your mother and I. To those who are good to you, you have to treasure it and be thankful, and ALSO you have to be cautious, because, everyone has a motive for every move. When a person is good to you, it does not mean he really likes you. You have to be careful, don't hastily regard him as a real friend.

2. No one is indispensable, nothing in the world that you must possess. Once you understand this idea, it would be easier for you to go through life when people around you don't want you anymore, or when you lose what/who you love most.

3. Life is short. When you waste your life today, tomorrow you would find that life is leaving you. The earlier you treasure your life, the better you enjoy life.

4. Love is but a transient feeling, and this feeling would fade with time and with one's mood. If your so called loved one leaves you, be patient, time will wash away your aches and sadness. Don't over exaggerate the beauty and sweetness of love, and don't over exaggerate the sadness of falling out of love.

5. A lot of successful people did not receive a good education, that does not mean that you can be successful by not studying hard ! Whatever knowledge you gain is your weapon in life. One can go from rags to riches, but one has to start from some rags !

6. I do not expect you to financially support me when I am old, neither would I financially support your whole life. My responsibility as a supporter ends when you are grown up. After that, you decide whether you want to travel in a public transport or in your limousine, whether rich or poor.

7. You honor your words, but don't expect others to be so. You can be good to people, but don't expect people to be good to you. If you don't understand this, you would end up with unnecessary troubles.

8. I have bought lotteries for umpteen years, but I never strike any prize. That shows if you want to be rich, you have to work hard ! There is no free lunch !

9. No matter how much time I have with you, let's treasure the time we have together. We do not know if we would meet again in our next life.

Love,

Your Dad

Two souls are different, not right or wrong

When the other person is right according to their perspective and we feel they are wrong, conflict has begun. Two souls are different, not right or wrong. Each is always right from their perspective.

Empathy means to detach from your own perspective and see the situation from the perspective of the other person. This creates understanding and compassion.

Even if we cannot understand the other persons perspective, let us always remember that what they are saying is the truth for them. This is the first step towards conflict resolution.

Accept your negative sanskar or the sanskar of the other person. Acceptance means no negative thoughts and energy of love keeps flowing. This love and power helps to create a new sanskar. Acceptance is the first step to Realisation and Transformation.

If there is a strain in any relationship, then definitely we are creating wrong quality of thoughts for them. We need to clean our thoughts; else even the best words and behavior will not get the right result.

To begin healing any relationship, do not focus on their behavior, words or what they think about us. Let us take care that we are creating the right thoughts and behavior towards them. If one person changes, it will influence the other and healing begins.

When we are adjusting to sanskars of the other person, we need to remember, they are also adjusting with our sanskars. Two souls will always have different sanskars and will find the others sanskars uncomfortable.

Accept the other persons sanskar, which means remain stable. Now help them to create a new sanskar and give them time to do it.

Prayer

Life is a mystery enclosed  in an enigma. We claim to be the Nation where religious people believe in  the theory of Karma and secular people in scientific law of Cause and Effect, yet there is no reasonable thinking nor any rational  action  in our response. Though we never grudge or  complain when good things happen to us and always grumble and grieve when bad things happen to us, we rarely reflect why we're given good things and made suffer bad things.

The scriptures if we are receptive, seers and saints if we respond to their words tell us that the Supreme Being, is impartial, has no favourites to choose one from the others. He guides those who are on righteous Path guarding them from unrighteousness diversions,  gracing them with possessions and pleasures, giving them favours and fortunes. He punishes those who are on unrighteousness Paths with suffering and sorrow, taking away their good possessions and pleasures, to point out and remind them that they are on erroneous by lanes. They need to be aware of their errors and conscious of the righteous course to be perused.

Knowledge of our errors opens the gate to glory of Wisdom.  It spurs us to action and leads to perfection.  We pray for things we do not possess, desire to be what we are not.  Let us stop on our track to revisit the deeds done done and the deeds undone, to think and reflect on the things to be done and the thing to be undone. Let our prayers to the Supreme Being be not for asking things but for acknowledging and thanking him for what has been ordained.  The sufferings and sorrows are for reminding our errors, the possessions nd pleasures are the rewards given for being on the righteous Path.

If there are wants in our life and sufferings too then let reflect and repent for the unrighteous deeds done and pray for strength to stay steadfast in doing righteous deeds.  Surrender not only with outward actions but internally with mind and heart. Then the Supreme Being will surely extend his thousand hands and grace with gifts which our two hands can scarcely hold.

Premonition

Few words on Personal Note.

Suddenly some times with no sign  or suggestion some thing strikes our mind which gives momentum for thoughts to flow. Some such thing happened to me one early morning even before the Sun rose to illumine the world around, when I switched on the TV and the Open Space, the serial dealing  with biblical wordsflashed on the screen.

The words in the Psalm were as follows "Lord, make me know mine end, and the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am". The words appeared to me significant for looking back on the and events that have been in my life earlier and think of the present which i am now living.

Human beings take life too much for granted, knowing not when one has to depart from this body, Death knocking on the door making his presence felt. The unwise ones spend their life in the body, never knowing when they have to discard it, never planning their present moments ever looking to the past moments that have gone and dreaming and hoping for future uncertain moments. Wise ones remembering and learning from their past moments live their present moments wisely and well never dreaming and hoping for the future moments.

Therefore the Psalm is relevant. It makes one conscious that departure from the body is certain, though one doesmknow when. Therefore he prays God to let him know when the end would come and how many days yet remain to live in the body. Knowledge instils fear in the heart of the weak and ignorant; instils confidence and determination to  make best use of the days available.  Remember the toothpaste tube! Even when some paste yet remains in the tube unwise ones throw the whole tube while the wise ones squeeze the tube to extract as must paste as there exists in the tube.

I thought of this since long.  When I completed sixty years of my life in the present body,  I decided to squeeze as much from my life as I could. My studies in spiritual subjects, which till then were intermittent and sporadic were made continuous and intensive. Even as my studies continued even so did my being
receptive to strange reverberations in mind, reflecting on them I chose to put them in words. What I wrote, some liked it and some didn't.

Since then I have been writing books, published some and the rest uploaded on my web site. I never claimed that I am a writer or wise one in philosophy. Those who read my books some complimented me for what I have expressed, some others commented that there more spelling mistakes and grammatical horrors.  It mattered me little, because what I had written was enriching my life, there was no regret because I wrote for making myself clear in mind, never wrote for others to accept recognition.

I will continue to do what I am doing. Therefore if Gods make me to know my end and the measure of my days, then it will help me to know how frail I am and use the rest of days well. So help me God.

The great fall of he Rupee

When we were children before the world war II had even started, I remember my father telling us about the value of the Rupee, which  has gone down sliding since the time when he himself was a child. We children who used to think ourselves wiser than our father was, because we had more material goods to divert our mind than he had, used to look at each and smile.  He used to tell us he pays Income tax on his income which had just crossed Rs Ten Thousand, we could not but wonder how rich he was.

Now the time has changed. Now when I tell my grandson the decline in the value of the Rupee, he consoles me that it is global phenomenon. When I told them that I could live in a posh locality with a salary of Rs 300 /- per month, he would look at me as if I have lost my mind,  because even our maid servant earns more than Rs 3000 and considers herself to be poor. When my father was worried about paying Income tax on the Annual Income of Rs 10,000/-our maid servant does not have to bother even if her income crosses more than Rs 1,00,000.

Yes the value of the Rupee has fallen, so have  the moral values and ethical standards but the present generation does not seem to realise or concerned.

Yes, morals fallen, families are broken, relationship is strained, loyalty is not known, compassion is doubtful, even earlier sufferings seem bearable, pleasures of the future casting frightening shadows. There was great understanding earlier, now there is absence of acceptance of other views and opinions, confrontation replacing commonality of communication.

Yes the Rupee has fallen in value, so have the moral values and ethical standards.

Selfish attachment to the external objects of desire has taken over attraction to the Self within. Who has seen the future or the next life? Live in the present which is seen and felt by senses. Money and possessions are gathered not for happiness but for satisfaction of the ego. We  value now our riches, not our happiness.  We hope to be protected by our politicians not by the Providence. We value our bank balance not the ecological balance. We value the gain from the misery of others not their pain and Sufferring.

Yes the Rupee has fallen in value, so have the moral values and ethical standards.

Therefore ministers are not worried because the more the value of the Rupee falls, the larger becomes their possession of dollors and pounds, the number of Rupees they can claim to possess increasing many fold.

How long, how long my Lord!  Has not unrighteousness increased sufficiently, has not righteous ones suffered adequately! When will you come to destroy the unrighteousness and protect the righteous ones, establishing righteousness amidst gloom and obscurity ?

Kedarnath

When I read many reactions of the people seeing the destruction at Kedarnath, I remember the story which I used to hear about a missionary who used to hold in his hands to idols one of Krishna made of Stone and another of Jesus to convince illiterate pagans in Indian country side the superiority of Christian  God over Hindu God. He will throw both the idols in river Mandovi and pontificallay declare that Christian god is superior because hen thrown in a river he comes up floating in the water, but Hindu God sinks, not being able to save himself.

That was about eighty years back when I was but a child but I am surprised modern intellectuals even now say with a smirk on their face, that Shiva god of destruction could not save himself from destruction caused y Nature. While blind believers say that even when everything was destroyed Shiva stood tall and even Nandi did not budge from its place. If there was destruction it was caused by Shiva himself, furious at the mindless interference and destruction of nature, Prakriti which is the female counter part of the male energy which Shiva represents.

This simple explanation will not be accepted by one who has closed his eyes and shut the doors of his heart. For such one any number of arguments will be acceptable and no amount of evidence will be convincing. No one can  convince one who has closed his mind and heart.  In a mind that is barren nothing sprouts, in a mind that is not responsive, no flowers will ever bloom.

The Supreme Being is verily the Supreme Existence, for which the word used is Satya, derived from Sankrit root as, to be, to exist, therefore Satya, the Prime Existence.  Prakriti is the energy which dwells within the Supreme Existence, which manifests as Nature. Rta is the divine Will that exists as the Cosmic Law that regulates the cosmos or  in the modern terminology, the ecological balance in the universe. Dharma constitute the  principles which govern this ecological balance. The word  Dharma is derived from the root Dhru, to uphold.

When the principles of Dharma are violated, the Rta, the ecological balance becomes disturbed in Nature and Prakriti, symbolised by the female counter part Goddess Shakti of the male energy of therime Existence, sets right the ecological balance by punishing the intrhansiencent. The earthquakes, typhoons, storms and  floods are the visible form of punishments, demoralisation, pain and Sufferring, death and degradation, punishment is meted with no compassion, no mercy. Supereficially, the innocent ones seem to suffer but no one knows for what acts, Karma, they are hurt but deep down punishment is reserved for every one, whethoer they are aware or not. For the wise ones there is need to be cautious for they know not their earlier Karmas, but they could be conscious of their future Karmas.

Faithful people believe that the statues of goddess Dhari Devi, who is one of the manifestation of Shakti were removed from the original place to make way for human need. Nature is Prakriti, Prakriti is Parvati. When Nature is violated, Prakriti,  Parvati cannot rest in peace, it becomes furious and aggressive destroying every that exists, in violation of Rta, the ecological balance and  Dharma, the principles which are laid. Therefore, Nature caused destruction, Shiva stood still and aloof silent stupefied at the fury of Prakriti.

None, no one will be allowed to step foot on the land which is the centre of Divine Energy, Power, till the fury of the goddess becomes       Calm. Mother cannot remain angry for long. For her children she will soon bring bounties.

Till then let the politicians fight with each other, deciding with arrogance who shall build the temple. It is the Goddess who will decide. If she wishes she will restore the natural beauty, for she has seen the rot which the greedy and arrogant man have contributed.

It is good that the pilgrimages (?) to the holy land will cease for some time. That period is sufficient for Prakriti to becomes proactive.

That is the explanation for the death and destruction.
